Oh, it’s good to be with you again today. I’ve been waiting all weekend to get back to this true story, which I thought involved just Sarah and me with a couple of other characters in the background, but, oh, how beautiful it is when we add the historical characters of Jairus, the woman with the chronic illness who has now been healed and Jesus! Grab your coffee and come with me back to Mark 5, just before our WOW.
So Jesus is standing there looking down with love and compassion at this woman who has fallen at His feet after receiving a miraculous healing. She felt instantaneously that her chronic bleeding – twelve years chronic! – has stopped and with that healing came a spiritual healing. See, she was an outcast, broken and poor but her faith, the size of a mustard seed was pure because Jesus says to her: “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” It’s like He sealed the deal. And I don’t want to go off on another rabbit trail because I know you’re waiting to hear about what happens with Sarah, but let me just say to you as passionately as I can that Jesus addressed not just her physical affliction, but her spiritual ones as well!
And over on the side, we have Jairus, anxiously waiting for Jesus to hurry it up so He can get to his need: his dying daughter. Like I said before, he’s probably sitting there with his arms crossed, tapping his foot trying his very hardest to keep from screaming: PLEASE CAN WE GO?
WOW!
WOW!
Wait a minute; who is that in the distance? He’s coming closer and closer and . . . Oh, it’s someone from Jairus’s household and the expression on his face is incredibly somber.
Oh, dear, he has just brought Jairus terrible news: “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
Let’s stop right there! How many times have we received news that rendered us hopeless? Or found ourselves in desperate need for some words of encouragement, some sort of something to cling to that makes us feel better, something that fills us with hope and gives us enough strength to make it through the next hours in the circumstance?
This is how desperate Sarah was when Jesus brought her to me and me to her!
Finish our time thinking about any experience that resembles this . . .
Love and joy,
Evinda
