The Twelve Days of Purpose

It’s great to be with you! Tis the season, just days before this year is over! Blink and 2014 will be here. I can’t think of a better way to prepare for the upcoming year than to go through these twelve steps of purpose, which I know will make our Christmas season a lot more enjoyable as well. Grab your coffee and let’s go talk for a few about this word – oh my goodness, I just saw that “purpose” has eight letters and the number eight represents resurrection, new beginnings! Whew, I just got the goose bumps because when we discover His purpose for our lives, it is a new beginning. Let’s party!
The $1000 question: What is my purpose? How many of us have asked that question? Whether young or more mature, at some point most of us wonder what our purpose is.
Before I get into the 12 steps, I want to lay a foundation for “purpose” that hopefully you will find so solid that you too will have a better idea of what your purpose is. The definition alone may take us 12 days! :)
First, did you know that the word purpose in all its forms is in the Word of God at least 76 times? Because it is, I thought it would be fun to give you some Hebrew (Old Testament) definitions and then a couple definitions from the Greek (New Testament) concordance.
I’m not trying to give an English lesson, but let me tell you there is significance in noun versus verb, so with that in mind, here we go: The Hebrew definition as a noun is: an action, good or bad, work, deed, labor, practice or behavior. Purpose often translates to: pleasure, and/or desire and as you can guess, can be used positively or negatively. The choice is ours.
Let’s talk about our purposeful actions around this time of year: we shop, bake, decorate our home, shop some more, wrap, shop, bake some more, visit others, have others over, and how many of us can say that we are truly finding pleasure in all of it? What motivates us to do it all? Let me tell on myself for a minute, and actually share a bit of a breakthrough. Traditionally, two of our grown kids and their children join us for a tree decorating evening and I have to say those have been my favorite memories as far as a Christmas tree goes.
Well, this year, we had a wedding the first weekend of December, and then next weekend is my husband’s company Christmas party, and we could make it happen the day after, which would be the 15th, but after thinking about it, and honestly asking myself, "Self, would you rather spend $50 to $80 on presents or on a tree?" I got an idea.
Suddenly the five foot silk plant in the corner was looking more and more appealing with lights and tree ornaments on it and the coolest thing about that is it’s okay! I’m not bummed or mad but counting my blessings that I know that I know that His purpose for Christmas wasn’t based on a tree – Nope, that’s Easter! -- but on the gifts that money can’t buy which bring us life.
