Secret Faults & Presumptuous Sins-From Coffee Hour @ ChicklitPower

Psalms 19:12-14

Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. ¹³ Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of great transgression.

Oh, thank you so much for stopping by to have coffee with me and to explore more of our November’s WOW! Something tells me we may be in these words of wisdom for a while, at least a week, but what the heck, there’s no time limit when it comes to understanding the mysteries in the Word of God as they turn out to be the most powerful weapons in our journey of life! Grab your coffee and let’s get back to where we left off, secret faults.
Before we get up close and personal, let’s do a bit of research here because if you notice, David first speaks about his errors and then makes a jump to secret faults. So is this a big jump or a little one?
Oh my, as I look in the Hebrew and Greek concordance, for this particular verse, there is no translation for faults! Hmm, now my curiosity is really brimming over. In fact, there is only two translations for “faults” in the Old Testament and the first one happens to be in Genesis 41:9 where a servant of Pharaoh says “I remember my faults” when he was unable to interpret Pharaoh’s dream – that’s a whole other story so let’s stay on track here. But this “faults” seems to indicate an inability so that would be different from “secret faults.”
The next translation is found in James, and this is in what appears to be a similar context wherein James is beseeching us to confess our faults one to another (James 5:16) so we’ll look that translation up and see what we find, but have you ever wondered why we’re instructed to do so? My first answer is accountability — oops, there I go again. Sorry, let’s look this translation up:
Whew, this is a mouthful so ready yourself!
The Greek translation is “paraptoma” and the way it’s pronounced makes me think of that song in the Disney movie the Lion King Hakuna Matata! Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself.
Okay. So the definitions for the “faults” James is referring to are: “A side-slip (lapse or deviation).”
What it says next is rather perplexing, or will be to some of us. These “faults” could be deemed an unintentional error or a willful transgression!
Well, that’s about as clear as mud. Let’s keep going for some clarity. Remember the more truth we pour into the lies we’ve purchased, the clearer the truth will become!
“Primarily, this word means a false step, a blunder; hence, a lapse from uprightness, a sin, a moral trespass, misdeed, a downfall, a falling down alongside of the correct path.”
As a noun, “Paraptoma” means: “to fall away.”
So to wrap that up as succinctly as possible without deviating or falling away from its veracity – so as to commit another fault, lol! – Good people who love God do side-step, blunder; they do deviate from right by doing wrong!
When someone does you wrong, what do you do to stay on higher ground, in other words, not deviate from what you know to be true so as to commit a secret fault?
